This application come with two functionalities “export project families” and “upgrade families to current version”

Family Extractor

Select folder where families to be saved.

Press the “Process” button to start the export process.

Revit will loop through every family in the project and save a copy of family to the specified folder.

 

This Family utility come with two functions.

1st “Family Extractor” export projects families to a folder.

2nd “Family Upgrader” bulk upgrade previous version of families to current version. This app is intended to help upgrade family contents. You can also use it to upgrade project files.

  • Go to the “Add-ins” tab “Family Utility” panel click on “Family Utility” to start the command.
  • It will starts the command and launches the “Family Utility “Form dialog.

This Family utility come with two functions which you can select from the selection Family utility form selection tab.

1st “Family Extractor” export projects families to a folder.

From the browse button specify to the folder where families to be saved.

Press the “Process” button to start the export process.

Revit will loop through every family in the project and save a copy of family to the specified folder.

The progress will be displayed in the list box at the lower part of the form.

2nd “Family Upgrader” bulk upgrade previous version of families/projects to current version.

“The family upgrader function of this app was originally written by Saikat Bhattacharya of the Autodesk Developer Technical Services team and published as Plugin of the Month, June 2011.”

From the 1st browse button under the “Source folder” text, specify the location of the folder where previous versions of Revit files resides. Similarly, 2nd browse button in the “Destination folder” text, specify the folder where the upgraded filers will be saved.

Check the file types you would like to upgrade; you can upgrade .rvt, .rfa, and .rte files. By default, .rvt and .rfa are checked.

Press the “Upgrade” button to start the upgrade.

Once upgrade starts, Revit will open a file one by one, and save in the destination folder. The progress can be monitored in the list box at the lower part of the dialog.

After the upgrade process is completed, a dialog box is displayed with the total count of succeeded files over total number of files confirming the completion of upgrade. The status messages are also saved as a log file, UpgraderLog.txt, in the destination folder.

(For some reason, if the files fail the automatic upgrade process, the users can check the log file, and manually open the files and save them to the current version after resolving the conflicts/errors using the Revit user interface.)

The tool handles nested folders. It also handles catalog files (.txt files) if it exists, copying them to the destination folder.
